TREES ON LBS ROAD BE PROTECTED – KIRIT
SOMAIYA
MMRDA,
contractors’ demand to cut, uproot 1274
trees on LBS Road is absurd.
Dr. Kirit Somaiya, ex MP, had paid
site visit and inspected these trees on
LBS Road from Sion to Mulund Check Naka
yesterday. Officials from MMRDA, Tree Authority, BMC, Contractor,
activists were also present.
The Road Contractor has already cut
26 trees including one 80-year old tree.
The
Tree Authority Chairman and Municipal
Commissioner, Mr. Johny Joseph accepted
Dr. Somaiya’s request to review the
proposal of MMRDA and the permission given
by Tree Authority.
The authorities have agreed not to
cut any tree on the LBS Road till the
review is completed.
Originally,
MMRDA under MUIP Project of expansion of
LBS Road from Sion to Mulund Check Naka,
had decided to cut 1274 trees.
Tree Authority had permitted to cut
355 trees.
Most of the trees are 25 to 100
years old.
Tree Authority has asked to
transplant 655 trees.
There
are 2320 trees on LBS Road between Sion
and Mulund Check Naka.
They are all more than 25 to 100
years old trees.
Dr. Somaiya has suggested that,
without disturbing the development,
expansion of LBS Road programme, all these
trees can be saved.
MMRDA, BMC, Tree Authority have
agreed to the suggestions of Dr. Somaiya
that, to save these trees, a little
diversion of public utility service may be
required to be done on the fourth lane of
the expansion work.
This is feasible according to the
experts. Dr. Somaiya has urged Tree Authority to review its permission
and postures in its meeting to
be
held on 29th October.
