Hriday Shan

HRIDAY (Health Related Information Dissemination Amongst Youth) and SHAN (Student Health Action Network) are two components of a voluntary organization (HRIDAY) and are engaged in activities aiming to promote health awareness and informed health activism among school and college students. HRIDAY was born in June 1992 as a response to India's health transition, wherein altered living habits were leading to rising burden of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Community mobilization through health education is a key element of a comprehensive public health response to this transition. Youth, in particular, had to be assisted in learning to live healthy and stay healthy.

HRIDAY targets school students aged (10-13 years) because behaviours get etched during early school days and can be positively influenced by providing appropriate information in an engaging manner. SHAN is a network of high school students (14-17 years), which provides a forum for the students to discuss future policies and programmes related to various health issues and voice their demands to the policy makers.

Objectives:

To disseminate information related to behaviours which positively influence health (like appropriate diet and nutrition, physical activity, stress management, protecting environment and avoidance of addictions like tobacco) and prevent disorders such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity which are caused by unhealthy behaviors.
To promote awareness and adoption of healthy living habits among school and college students and their families.
To positively alter attitudes of school and college students towards adoption of healthy living behaviours and promote a supportive environment for sustaining such behaviours.
To encourage school and college students to actively articulate their demands for appropriate governmental policy (legislation/regulation), which will be conducive to their present and future health.
To evolve consensus on health related issues among students, for actions at individual, family, school and community levels which will help protect and promote their present and future health.
To create a healthy environment at school, home and community levels through partnerships for health action.
Projects Accomplished:

HRIDAY started health promotion programmes in 30 schools of Delhi in 1992 and has expanded over the years to include 300 schools and 10 colleges in Delhi.

HRIDAY has successfully implemented programmes in schools by training Teacher Coordinators and Student Peer Leaders, who conduct and coordinate HRIDAY-SHAN activities at school level.
HRIDAY conducted a collaborative research study with University of Minnesota, USA during 1996-98. The intervention provided in this project successfully reduced experimentation with smoking and intentions to use tobacco among the youth.
HRIDAY has expanded from school based health education to involve families of students and has effectively influenced communities in their neighbourhood towards health promotion.
