In
1995, Kirit Somaiya was elected to the State Assembly
from Mulund by a record margin of over 44,000
votes.
Later in the year, he
was elected as the President of the Mumbai Unit
of the Bhartiya Janata Party. He was the youngest
person to be elected as the President of any political
party in Mumbai.
In November 1995,
the BJP Mumbai organised a Maha Adhiveshan of
the Party in Mumbai. To make preparations and make the
adhiveshan a success a task force of over 1200 activists
gave their full time for two months to the party - in
making preparations for the Maha - Adhiveshan, which
was held at the Race Course. The Maha Adhiveshan was
a grand success. Over 1.65 lac delegates from all over
the country attended. This was biggest meet ever arranged
by any political party in Mumbai.
After the Maha Adhiveshan,
there were general elections in March 1996. The BJP
- Sena alliance swept all the six seats in Mumbai. In
1997 came the elections to the Brihan Mumbai Municipal
Corporation. In these elections too the BJP in alliance
with the Shiv Sena secured a majority in the Corporation.
On the organisational
front, to broad base the acceptability of the party
and attract people from all walks of life, various Cells
like the Professional's Cell, Film Cell, South Indian
Cell, Trade & Sahakar Cells were activated. This
gave people from diverse fields a chance to associate
with the party and contribute their mite.
The Zopadpatti Janata
Parishad of the BJP organised a 10,000 strong 'Adhivashan
Morcha' on the Vidhan Sabha in 1996 to press
for their demands. The then CM, Manohar Joshi addressed
the grievances of the slum-dwellers and agreed to solve
their rightful problems.
Slums registered before
1st Jan, 1995 were given NOC. Basic Civic amenities
viz. Toilets, water and electricity were provided to
them.
Committed to given women
33 % participation, the Mahila Morcha conducted
a survey in Mumbai on the issue and later organised
a Seminar in which representatives from all political
parties participated. Similarly, the Kamgar
Morcha organised a series of rallies in Mumbai
especially in the labour dominated areas, to look into
the grievances of the people and reassure them of the
govt. and party policy vis-a-vis the Sukhtankar Committee
set up to look into the issue of rehabilitating people
living in old chawls and structures. The recommendations
of the Sukhtankar Committee were accepted
by the govt. An additional 125 crores were sanctioned
for repairs of 19,800 old buildings in Mumbai.
To solve the various problems
faced by Mumbaikars viz. Roads, water, transport, rehabilitation
of slums, electricity etc. the BJP Mumbai has demanded
that the centre should sanctiona adhoc grant of 1000
crores for the city. This demand met with initial success
when the Vajpayee govt. gave an interim grant of Rs.
100 crores for the city.
The BJP Mumbai Unit followed
up vigourously with the Union Minister of State for
Railways Shri. Ram Naik the matter of having a separate
board. This met with success with the establishment
of the Mumbai Rail Vikas Nigam, giving
respite to Mumbai's 50 lacs daily rail commuters.
Mumbai was the only city
to have the cumbersome and out-dated Coroner Court Act.
The Coroner Court Act was repealed
after the BJP Mumbai executive pain-stakingly followed
up on the matter with the govt.
The Investors
Protection Act was promulgated after great
follow up. This act shall now protect the interests
of lacs of small investors in the state.
To strengthen the organisation,
special emphasis was laid on completing all appointments
down to the Ward level. It was decided that a Ward president
shall be made the core point around which the organisation
structure shall be built. Periodic study camps were
held for Ward presidents to evaluate and train them.
In another novel concept
- as a preparation for the coming elections and to galvanise
the party, a decision was taken to appoint BOOTH PRAMUKHs
in Mumbai. Another concept - 'ONE BOOTH, 10 YOUTH',
whereby 10 activists shall assist each Booth pramukh
was evolved.
The appoint of 5000 such
booth level incharge is complete. BJP is perhaps the
only political party to spin such a web of organisation. |
