Kirit
Jayantilal Somaiya has been the voice of
Mumbai in the 13th Loksabha. |
|
As an
MP, elected to the Parliament for the first
time in 1999 from Mumbai’s North East
Constituency, Kirit Somaiya has raised a
record number of over 500 subjects pertaining
to the city through Starred and Unstarred
questions and Parlaimentary petitions. |
|
He has
established himself as a live-wire MP with
varied interests in Social, Financial, Sports
and Health fields. In the past five years, he
has strived hard to improve the transport
system of Mumbai, esp. the local train
services. |
|
As a parliamentarian, he used Parliamentary
petitions as an effective tool to highlight
some of the city’s contentious issues and seek
solutions. |

Petition for a
new Nahur Railway Station – this long standing
demand has been granted and very soon Nahur
Station shall become operational. |

Extending
passenger services from Kurla upto Mahul. |

He
was appointed on the Joint Parliamentary
Committee probing the Stock Market scam and
various Parliamentary Committees on Finance,
Commerce and Industry. |

He
is the only MP from Mumbai who utilized over
95 % of his MP fund for developmental projects
in the Constituency. |
|
During the Earthquake in Gujarat, Kirit was
the first MP who announced a relief of Rs. One
crore for the victims in Gujarat. |

|
Kirit Somaiya is a qualified and Gold Medalist
Chartered Accountant. |
|
He entered the political arena at a very young
age during the Jayprakash Narayan’s movement
against corruption. Subsequently he started
working with youth wing of Bharatiya Janata
Party and proved to be a able and skillful
organiser. |
|
In
1995, he was elected as the President of BJP
Mumbai. During his 5 years as President, the
party rose in strength and stature in the
City. |
|
Knowing that only political activities are
not sufficient to serve the people properly,
he engaged himself in various social
activities too. |
|
He
was elected as a Member of the Maharashtra
Legislative Assembly as a BJP Candidate in the
year 1994. He excelled himself as a legislator
and took up many issues concerning the common
man and in Public Interest. |
|
Repealing the stringent and black law of
Coroners’ Court, Introduction of the
Maharashtra Protection of Investors Act,
building of Sub-ways near fly-overs are a few
things possible solely due to his efforts. |
|
He
is the President of the INVESTORS GRIEVANCES
FORUM, an NGO dedicated to protect the rights
of the small investors. |
|
As a
social activist, he has successfully organised
a number of programmes / activities through
Yuvak Pratishthan, a registered public trust
NGO, of which he is President. It is necessary
to quote a few of the mass awareness campaigns
conducted by him : |

Khel Mahotsav,
held every year for the young and old to take
part and enjoy life through sports. More than
a Lac people participate in various sporting
events every year. |

Hepatitis B
Vaccinations to over 25 lac doses with an aim
to make Mumbai Hepatitis B Free. During last
12 months about 10 lacs children below 10
years having vaccinated through 22000 camps
organised at various places in Mumbai with the
help of Local NGOs. The campaign is now being
extended to other parts of the country. |

AIDS FREE MUMBAI
– awareness campaign aiming at preventing
Mother to Child tranmission and making the
next generation Aids Free. |

TB Free Mumbai –
Started over 300 TB DOTS centres in the
constituency with an aim of making 50,000
people TB Free in one year. |

Truly, he is unique – a politician with a
difference. |
